Shifting the Trajectory: Undoing the Damage of Working in Front of a Screen

We solve impossible technical challenges, build systems serving billions, and automate the world – yet we haven’t figured out how to sit at a desk without destroying our bodies.

Most of us have heard ”you just sit all day” at some point in our careers, as if that means we have it easy. But the idea that sitting all day has little impact on our bodies could not be further from the truth – and this isn’t about being out of shape. It affects people who exercise regularly just as much as those who don’t.

The research is sobering. Within hours of sitting, arteries lose elasticity and blood pressure spikes. After a day, insulin dysfunction kicks in. Days later, 4,500+ genes in your muscles rewire themselves and fat-burning enzymes drop by 90%. Meanwhile, your body builds structure around whatever you do repeatedly – which is how we end up with ”tech neck,” hunched backs, and spinal degeneration. Our generation is among the first to spend most of their lives sitting. These changes are widespread, yet we rarely discuss them openly.

I learned this the hard way; active engineer → COVID couch potato → 41-year-old developer with chronic pain. Rather than an outsider looking in, this talk comes from someone who has been where you are and decided to do things differently. It’s a call to action, arming you to make the shift from inevitable decline toward lasting mobility and vitality.

Join me for a webinar on Wednesday, February 11th at 3 PM, where you will:

  • Learn what current research reveals about the real impact of prolonged sitting.
  • Understand why common fixes like standing desks and exercise alone aren’t enough.
  • Discover practical strategies you can start applying immediately.

Whether you’re a developer, designer, or anyone spending most of your workday at a screen – and whether you are 20 or 50 years old – this is for you. The webinar is open for Code from Finland members.

About the writer

Georgios Diamantopoulos is a pragmatic engineer with a unique ability to synthesize complex information and translate it into actionable systems. As co-founder of Zero to MVP since 2019, Georgios and his team have built 25+ scalable systems by taking a holistic view of requirements, constraints, and sustainability. In parallel, his personal journey through the physical challenges of our industry led him to dive deep into health research – not as an outsider, but as someone living the same reality as every developer: the gradual physical toll of prolonged sitting, the cascade of adaptations our bodies make, and the realization that conventional wisdom about developer wellness misses the mark. This first-person perspective, combined with systematic thinking, allows him to bridge cutting-edge research with the day-to-day reality of tech work, addressing the challenges we all face but rarely discuss openly.
